Castleton

Castleton is famous for "blue John" stone & Mam Tor. Learn the history by visiting ruins of the castle, where the village got its name from.

History of Castleton dates back to 1086 (similar to Hathersage). The famous Peverel's Castle were belonging to Sir William Peverel and it is now a part of an English Heritage.

Castleton is surrounded by the hills, the views from the White Peak and famous Great Ridge are breathtaking. You can climb up to Mam Ror, Back Tor and Lose Hill and walk down to village Edale.

You can visit the Odin Mine, one of the oldest lead mines in the country as the village was rich in lead. Due to the source of lead, the local caverns are open to public - Peak Cavern, Blue John Cavern, Speedwell Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern.

Blue John mineral is locally sourced and you can buy this mineral from the jewellery stores situated in Castleton. Beside that there are many pubs, tea shops and newly refurbished Visitors centre.
